Mar.30.07 - New House
Alia's parents recently decided to buy a house here in Nanaimo so that they can retire here in three years. We're going to be renting it from them for the next three years. It's going to be a pretty big change for us - we'll be moving from our (tiny) 1-Bedroom-No-Dining-Room apartment into a 3.5 bedroom house with a nice back yard. Have a look at the pictures.
Oct.22.06 - IQ Light
And now for something kind of random... This past weekend I came across this web site and thought, "Why not?" So I made my very own IQ Light. It wasn't that hard, but then I was obsessed with origami as a kid so things of a paper-folding nature tend to come fairly easy to me. I replaced the boring light fixture in the living room of our new apartment and got a higher wattage bulb so that it would be bright enough. The one that I made consisted of 30 pieces printed with my little Bubble Jet printer on light-weight index paper that I happend to have lying around. (Regular printer paper is not nearly stiff enough.) Here's the pattern (PDF) if you'd like to make your own. If you check out the Varriations section on the IQ Light web site you'll see that there's a very large varriation made with 120 pieces; that's my next goal. I'd also like to find some sort of stiff yet translucent fabric to make the next one out of. Any ideas?
Oct. 17.06 - Latest Freelance Project Launched
My latest custom web design project is finished and online. OkanaganLuxuryEscape.com is a web site for a luxury property rental in Oyama, BC. Please see my Portfolio. I've learned a lot doing this site, especially about CSS and how to manage the complexities of a site where each main section uses different colors. Please take a look around and let me know what you think.
In other news, the company I'm working for can now be named: RealEstateWebmasters. I'm loving my job... learning lots every day and actually looking forward to going to work. (What a novelty!)
Sep. 29.06 - Moving
Moving to... Nanaimo...? Really?
Yep. We're moving to Nanaimo. I got a full-time web design job at a web design company that shall remain namless until I'm make sure that they don't mind if I post their name here. We weren't really looking to live in Nanaimo, (we'd actually been looking to work/live in Victoria,) but this job came along and the pay is good so we're moving. We spent the first three weeks of September looking for work & an aparment in Victoria without much luck. Then this job in Nanaimo came along so we thought we'd go check it out for the interview. I got the job and we got the first (and only) apartment that we looked at, all within the space of an afternoon. So we're moving.
Until recently, my impression of Nanaimo was limited to the ferry terminal and the rows of big box stores at the north end of town that one sees when driving to Tofino. That's all I had ever seen of the city. It turns out that the old quarter is pretty cool and I think it'll be a good place for us to live. The cost of living is lower, and my bi-weekly commute to Cap College in North Van requires way less travel time from Nanaimo than it did from Victoria. Our apartment (the first floor of a house, acutally,) is a 10-15 min. walk from downtown, has a clawfoot tub and a patio, and there's space for my better half to have a garden.
It's not really what we were expecting, but we're going to do it anyway and I think it will work out. I've got a good feeling.
Aug. 02.06 - Image Galleries
I've added a page full of various image galleries that I've collected from around the interweb. Enjoy.
The pictures from Keno are coming... just hold your horses!
July 17.06 - Testing, Testing... Anyone Out There?
I thought I'd start off my News page with a fairly big announcement: I'm engaged! I asked my lovely girlfriend of 3.5 years to marry me this weekend and she said yes!
We were hiking in the hills above Signpost Hill in Keno City, Yukon, which has to be one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. I'll post some pics as soon as they're developed.
Until then, here's a picture of Alia and I taken last Boxing Day.
At this point the details of the wedding are very vague. We know it's going to be sometime next summer in Whitehorse. That's about all we know at this point.
